The mission of Community Living Sioux Lookout is to guarantee that adults who have
developmental disabilities achieve their hopes, dreams and goals through our direct programs

History

Community Living Sioux Lookout (CLSL) provides support programs to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the Sioux Lookout and Hudson area.  We have been around in one form or another since the 1960s. The following is a timeline of notable moments since we began:

1960's

  • 1965 The Association registered as a non-profit charitable organization.
     
  • 1966 The Association received it's Charter.

1970's

  • 1974 The Association became incorporated.
     
  • 1975 The Muriel Boyle Center opened.
     
  • 1976 Our Life Skills / Culture and Recreation Programs were established.
     
  • 1977 An apartment on King Street and Third Avenue became the first physical site for our Day Program.
     
  • 1978 Our Work Adaptation Program was established and our Supported Independent Living (SIL) Program was established.

1980's

  • 1985 The Association purchased a building for our Day Program.
     
  • 1988 We began operating our Supported Employment Program.

1990's

  • 1990 Meadwell group home opened.
     

  • 1991 Our Life Skills Program changed names to Opportunities Plus and the Centennial Drive group home was opened.
     

  • 1992 The Prince Street group home and Drayton group home were opened. Our Residential Office was established and set up at our Third Avenue (Meadwell) location.  The Muriel Boyle Centre was closed.
     

  • 1994 the First Avenue group home was opened.
     

  • 1997 The Board of Directors merged all programs into one association named Sioux Lookout and Hudson Association for Community Living (SLHACL).  The agency hired our first executive director.  The Family Home Program was initiated.

2000's

  • 2000 Drayton group home closed.  Began partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to begin operating Ojibway Provincial Park.
     

  • 2001 Became the sponsor of the Healthy Generations Program funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
     

  • 2002 Our Transitions Program began operation.
     

  • 2003 The agency began operating a therapeutic Family Home.  The Day Program building was sold and we opened our newly built Day Program and Administrative Office at 41 King Street.
     

  • 2004 The MMW Pilot Video Conferencing project began between SLHACL (Sioux Lookout), Community Living Dryden and Surrey Place Centre (Toronto).  This project provided reliable access to clinical psychiatric and psychological services located in Toronto.
     

  • 2005 First Collective Bargaining Agreement signed with CEP-Local
